The Travis Pointe History

Before Travis Pointe Country Club was built, this beautiful area was known as Omega Farms.

In the mid 70’s, Connie and Cliff Simmons had a vision for their land and developed one of the premiere country clubs in Michigan. In June of 1976, construction began. Some of our ponds came from removing the dirt and using it to give the appearance the clubhouse was built on a hill. Others were dug to create the terrain for the golf course and the roads. Very little of the building has changed structurally since its completion yet it has seen two interior renovations – the most recent being completed in May 2004.

The clubhouse opened in September 1977, and the Club held its first Men’s Invitational on 9 holes, with the greatest challenge being the dirt and rocks of all sizes throughout the 9 holes. Bill Newcomb, the golf course designer, is a well respected golf course architect on a national level. He continues to come back as the golf course master plan consultant. Bill Farrand, the architect, was also the first President, having been appointed by the Simmons to oversee their vision. Mike Johns was the first elected President. By 1979, the membership was up to 1,100 and it stayed there for many years, until the members bought the club.

When the club opened, there was a Doe Room and a Stag Room. In the original layout of the Club, the area known as family dining was the Sandtrap Lounge. The Grille Room area was the deck and the Men’s Locker Room was in the area of the current bar. The Ballroom was the main dining area. Men were required to wear jackets in there at all times. Extra dark green jackets were kept in the coat closet, just in case someone forgot.

Moving forward, Jay Knutsen was the President during the time the membership bought the Club; the last several months of his term he served as President of the "member-owned Club". George Lindstrom was the first President elected under the new structure. He and the Board began the process of developing plans for the Club's first major renovation. This time was one of the most challenging for the membership.

13 of the former 20 Presidents are still members. Of the original membership, 80 families were still members at the time of the Club’s 25th Anniversary in 2002. Today, it’s exciting to see growth in the Legacy memberships, with second generation families now joining the Travis Pointe family.

The longevity of many of our staff members, some with close to 20 years and a few with more than 10 years, speaks very well of our quality staff and membership. It’s a great place to be!
